Summer has zipped by and we are excited to finish our final preparations before opening the doors for the 2016-2017 school year. We welcome our new principal, Mr. Swanson, our new teachers and staff, and look forward to seeing our new and returning students on Tuesday, September 6th.  The doors will open at 8:35am and school starts at 8:50am.

Back To School informational fliers will be available for pick-up in the classrooms on "Meet the Teacher" day on Friday, September 2, from 9:00-10:00am.  Doors will open at 8:55.  Please exit promptly so we can continue our preparations for Tuesdays' first day of classes.   We will have over 800 students at TJ this year, and if you are able to walk, bicycle, or car pool for the event, it should reduce the parking crunch.

Be sure to label your children's clothing and lunch boxes.
Jackets that are needed in the morning are quickly shed during recess, and forgotten during line up. Remind your child to check the lost and found which is found in the hallway between the cafeteria and the gym.  Very few of these items had a name in them!

Ms. Allan, FCEF Teacher of the Year

Hearty congratulations to the Falls Church Education Foundation Teacher of the Year, Ms. Lisa Allan, an exemplary fourth grade teacher at TJ since 1994. Students are grateful for the life-changing experience of being in her classroom. Colleagues look to her for leadership, compassion and guidance. Principal Paul Swanson noted that her "students are treated with dignity, warmth and goodness every single day."
Ms. Allan is an expert in Virginia history and geography, key components of the fourth grade curriculum. She brings history alive for her students, and models lifelong learning by participating in teacher institutes at Gunston Hall, Jamestown and Williamsburg and bringing those experiences to the classroom to benefit every student. According to parent Hannah Jordan, students "devour her social studies units like chocolate..."

Celebrate at the FCCPS Celebration of Excellence on Thursday, May 11 at MEHMS. Reception at 4:00 p.m. Ceremony at 4:45. Everyone is welcome!

fourth Grade Team honors Mrs. Potrykus the FCCPS Support Staff Employee of the Year

Last week the fourth grade team and school administrators surprised paraprofessional Jan Potrykus with the news that she has been selected as the FCCPS Support Staff Employee of the Year. In their nomination letter, the TJ fourth grade team wrote this:

As a special education paraprofessional to students in fourth grade, Jan Potrykus works closely with students and teachers in general education and special education settings. Colleagues share a deep appreciation for her dependability, sincerity, resourcefulness, and positive energy. Students are naturally drawn to her, are comforted and encouraged by her, and are excited to share their success with her. Parents admire the compassion she shows toward their children and marvel at her ability to form connections that result in significant academic, social, and behavioral growth

Jan is one of six nominees for this award. All nominees will be recognized at the FCCPS Celebration of Excellence on Thursday, May 11 at 4:00 p.m. in Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School cafetorium.
